Over the last three years I have been fortunate enough to return to study at University. At the end of 2018 I completed my three year Adv Dip in Spiritual Direction and I’ve just begun my theological studies with Ridley College. I am currently enjoying John H. Walton’s teaching on the Foundations of the Old Testament as an online student. It probably sounds cliché, but I have found studying as a ‘mature age student’ to be so rewarding! To be able to choose to return to University and to study something I’m pretty sure I’m going to love is exciting. Of course, there’s the grunt work of weekly assessments, looming due dates and readings that tie my brain in knots, but that’s nothing compared to what I’m learning about our God.
Recently during a lecture, I was reminded that God created humans with the purpose of dwelling amongst them. To be in His presence. For Adam and Eve to have ultimate access to God was to be the perfect scenario for life. Unfortunately, that idyllic picture didn’t last long and when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, He acted as a father would and disciplined them. Adam and Eve had that intimate access to God taken away from them.
Fast forward to our experience of God today and we have access to God returned! More than that, we can have part of God, the Holy Spirit living IN US. God living in us, how remarkable!
As I sat with that thought, that God initially created a world where He would dwell amongst us and now we have Him living in us, I had an a-ha moment! Is there nothing greater than to simply ‘Be’ with our God? To sit and enjoy His presence. The Israelites waited thousands of years for a saviour and God sent his son Jesus to be the fulfillment of that rescue plan. In Jesus we are saved from our sins to live again in a right-relationship with God. However, that wasn’t the end of the plan. Jesus says in John 16:7 “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” They had Jesus in the flesh, but we have the living God living in each of us who follow and love Him!
I encourage you to spend some time with the living God today. Take a moment, sit with Him. He with you and you with Him. It’s as simple as that.
